In a General Conference talk given by Dallin H. Oaks called “The Challenge to Become” he says “In contrast to the institutions of the world, which teach us to know something, the gospel of Jesus Christ challenges us to become something.”
“Now is the time for each of us to work toward our personal conversion, toward becoming what our Heavenly Father desires us to become. As we do so, we should remember that our family relationships—even more than our Church callings—are the setting in which the most important part of that development can occur. The conversion we must achieve requires us to be a good husband and father or a good wife and mother. Being a successful Church leader is not enough. Exaltation is an eternal family experience, and it is our mortal family experiences that are best suited to prepare us for it.”
We have divine potential and origin within ourselves. Joseph Smith said “If men do not comprehend the character of God, they do not understand themselves”
We are literal children of God with great capability when we an active part in the plan. By participating in our families, marrying and raising and being active in our own families we can become like God.
As we understand ourselves and where we come from we are better able to prepare for marriage by actively becoming our best selves.
What do you want to become? What do you want to become as a married couple? Set goals in how you will work towards these goals.
“The Lord does not expect that we do what we
cannot achieve. The command to become perfect, as He is, encourages us
to achieve the best of ourselves, to discover and develop the talents
and attributes with which we are blessed by a loving Eternal Father, who
invites us to realize our potential as children of God. He knows us; He
knows of our capacities and our limitations. The invitation and
challenge to become perfect, to achieve eternal life is for all
mankind.”
"Your light has made a difference to me and many
others. You have light because you are literally spirit daughters of
Deity, 'offspring of exalted parents' (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon
Doctrine, 2nd ed. [1966], 589) with a divine nature and an eternal
destiny. You received your first lessons in the world of spirits from
your heavenly parents. You have been sent to earth to 'prove'
yourselves."
"There has come to you as your birthright
something beautiful and sacred and divine. Never forget that. Your
Eternal Father is the great Master of the universe. He rules over all,
but He also will listen to your prayers as His daughter and hear you as
you speak with Him. He will answer your prayers. He will not leave you
alone."
"When we remember that each of us is literally a
spirit son or daughter of God, we will not find it difficult to approach
our Heavenly Father in prayer. He appreciates the value of this raw
material which we call life. 'Remember the worth of souls is great in
the sight of God' (D&C 18:10). His pronouncement inspires purpose in
our lives."
